Unleashing Transformation: The Role of Mutants and Mutagen in Magic: The Gathering®

Hello, readers! Today, we’re exploring the colorful chaos of Magic: The Gathering® | Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Let’s navigate through the intriguing mechanics while delving into the realm of Mutants and Mutagen.

The Connection of Green and Blue in Mutant Lore

We aimed to connect the color pair of green and blue to the theme of Mutants, reflecting the diverse mutant inhabitants of the TMNT universe. Notable allies of the Turtles enrich this colorful palette.

While the idea of integrating Magic’s mutate mechanic caught our attention, we concluded it wouldn’t fit this set due to its complexity.

Introducing Genghis Frog

Let’s spotlight Genghis Frog, the leader of the Punk Frogs!

Whenever CARDNAME attacks, one target creature you control and one target creature you don’t control become 3/3 and lose all abilities until end of turn.

We initially planned a mechanic inspired by merging creatures, ultimately guiding us toward focusing on noncreature tokens. Given the TMNT lore connection, Food tokens felt appropriate without affecting the gameplay pace.

After adjustments, we introduced a balanced version of Genghis Frog:

Whenever CARDNAME or another Mutant enters, create a Mutagen token. (An artifact with “{o1}, {oT}, Sacrifice: Place a +1/+1 counter on target creature. Activate only as a sorcery.”)

When CARDNAME takes damage, receive that many +1/+1 counters (she must withstand the damage).
