Updates surrounding the anticipated Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (KOTOR) remake have often been a mix of optimism and disappointment. Initially unveiled in 2021, this highly awaited project has faced significant setbacks. After the cancellation of its first development phase, a new team at Saber Interactive’s Mad Head Games is now taking up the reins.

Despite these shifts in development, glimpses of the prior iteration continue to emerge. Recent leaks revealed various assets, including concept art and early screenshots. Most recently, a captivating cinematic has surfaced, showcasing an early sequence of the story.

A Glimpse of Two Iconic Characters

This newly discovered cinematic, featured in an animator’s portfolio, showcases a work-in-progress snippet characterized by placeholder voice acting and minimal textures. Despite its unfinished state, the clip introduces two beloved characters: Captain Carth Onasi and Trask Ulgo, the latter serving as a guide in the original game.

In the sequence, the player character and Trask find themselves in the wake of a fierce battle within a ship’s corridor. They receive a communication from Carth just as an explosion lurks nearby. Trask comes to the rescue by activating an emergency door, wrapping up the scene with an immediate mission to locate Onasi.

A notable change from the original game is the fully voiced player character, which diverges from the silent protagonist model. This aligns with insights indicating an intention for the remake to introduce more engaging dialogue options and potentially a combat system reminiscent of other iconic games.

Interestingly, much of the material that has surfaced focuses primarily on the game’s early sections, suggesting these were the areas of most extensive progress during the previous development phase.

Ultimately, this version faced discontinuation, reportedly after a vertical slice did not meet expectations. Allegations from former developers have pointed to a systemic failure to reach internal goals, resulting in the project’s realignment.

Fortunately for fans, the Star Wars universe is still expanding beyond this remake. Upcoming titles like Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic promise new adventures for role-playing enthusiasts.
