A recently highlighted security function on the iPhone has sparked discussions after it hindered U.S. authorities from accessing a reporter’s device following a raid. This feature, known as Lockdown Mode, made a significant impact when the FBI was unable to retrieve information from the iPhone.
During a search connected to an investigation into a Pentagon contractor accused of mishandling classified information, the FBI seized her phone along with two MacBooks and other devices. However, according to a court document, the agency’s Computer Analysis Response Team reported that data extraction was impossible due to the Lockdown Mode status on the iPhone.
So, what exactly is Lockdown Mode? Here’s a brief overview of its functionality and activation:
Designed for the Select Few
Apple describes Lockdown Mode as an “optional, extreme” security feature aimed at protecting against “rare and sophisticated cyber threats.” It’s not intended for the general user base, but rather for a “small group of individuals” who might be at risk due to their professions or circumstances.
According to Apple’s support page, “Most users are unlikely to be targets of such attacks.”
This feature is available in the latest versions of Apple’s operating systems, including iOS 16 and macOS Ventura. Lockdown Mode imposes strict limitations on certain applications and functions, blocking access to areas that advanced spyware might exploit. Additionally, it restricts browser features and limits photo-sharing capabilities.
No Backdoors, Please
Apple has consistently declined U.S. government requests for backdoor access to its devices. In 2016, the company famously resisted a demand to bypass security on an encrypted iPhone linked to a terrorist incident. They also opted against integrating a system that would allow law enforcement to conduct “brute force” password attempts.
Apple articulated its stance, stating, “Deliberately weakening our products with a government-ordered backdoor would be unjust.”
Activating Lockdown Mode
If you want to use Lockdown Mode, ensure your iPhone, iPad, or MacBook is up to date. The feature needs to be activated individually on each device.
On your iPhone, navigate to Settings, then go to Privacy and Security. Scroll to the bottom, select Lockdown Mode, and enter your passcode (not using facial or fingerprint recognition) to turn it on. Your device will restart, after which you will need to unlock it with the passcode again. The process is similar on MacBooks, found under System Settings.
Apple suggests activating this mode across all your devices for enhanced protection.
Passcodes vs. Biometrics
You might think that using facial or fingerprint recognition to secure your device offers sufficient protection. However, experts argue that passcodes offer a stronger safeguard against law enforcement’s attempts to access your phone. Authorities can compel you to utilize your biometric credentials, but they cannot force you to provide your passcode.
Despite this, agents informed the reporter that they could not make her disclose her passcodes. However, the warrant allowed them to use her biometrics to unlock her devices, although ultimately, they managed to unlock her MacBook using her fingerprint.
Effects of Lockdown Mode on Your Device
Once activated, Lockdown Mode alters how certain apps and features operate. Some websites may perform slowly or experience loading issues, and images or fonts might not display correctly due to blocking “complex web technologies.”
In the Messages app, most attachments are restricted, and incoming FaceTime calls are blocked unless the number was previously dialed within a month. Location data is stripped from shared photos, and shared albums are disabled.
There are also stricter limitations on connecting your phone to unsecured Wi-Fi networks, other devices, or accessories. During my own experience with Lockdown Mode, I found that some apps signaled that certain functionalities might be impaired. Notably, when I went to my gym and had to scan a QR code, I found that the camera was disabled, prompting me to turn off Lockdown Mode to gain entry.
Deactivating Lockdown Mode
To turn off Lockdown Mode, follow the same steps you used to activate it. Enter your passcode and allow the device to restart.
