Previously, iOS allowed users to mute calls from numbers not stored in their Contacts, which sometimes led to missing important calls. The challenge was finding a balance between avoiding spam and ensuring genuine calls don’t go unnoticed.

Introducing “Ask Reason for Calling” in iOS 26

To access this feature, navigate to Settings > Apps > Phone, and you’ll find a section dedicated to screening unknown callers.

Users can select from three options:

• Never: Unsaved numbers will ring, and missed calls will show up on the Recents list.
• Ask Reason for Calling: This option prompts callers not in your Contacts to provide their reason for calling before your phone rings.
• Silence: Calls from unknown numbers are silenced, sent directly to voicemail, and still appear in the Recents log.
