New iOS Update Safeguards Your iPhone with Default Stolen Device Protection

With the release of iOS 26.4, Apple has enhanced security measures for iPhone users by enabling Stolen Device Protection automatically. This feature aims to offer a safety net in the event of an iPhone theft.

iOS Stolen Device Protection

In response to a growing trend of iPhone theft—where culprits observe victims to obtain their passcodes before committing the theft—Apple first introduced this feature in 2023. The goal is to fortify users’ data security during such incidents. With access to a passcode, thieves could potentially drain bank accounts and access sensitive information.

To activate certain functionalities, Stolen Device Protection requires users to authenticate themselves via Face ID or Touch ID. This added layer of security is applicable to features such as access to saved passwords, enabling Lost Mode through Find My, and making purchases via Safari.

Actions that now necessitate biometric authentication include:

  • Accessing passwords stored in iCloud Keychain
  • Applying for a new Apple Card
  • Viewing a virtual Apple Card
  • Disabling Lost Mode
  • Resetting all settings and data
  • Processing transactions in Wallet apps like Apple Cash and Savings
  • Utilizing payment options saved in Safari
  • Setting up a new device

Notably, users cannot use their passcodes as an alternative to bypass the biometric requirement for these actions.

For actions that have a one-hour security delay and require two forms of biometric verification, users must wait before proceeding. These include:

  • Changing the Apple ID password
  • Modifying Apple ID account security settings
  • Changing the iPhone passcode
  • Adding or removing Face ID or Touch ID
  • Disengaging Find My iPhone
  • Turning off Stolen Device Protection

Before iOS 26.4, users had to manually activate Stolen Device Protection via the Face ID and Passcode settings. Now, users also have the option to disable security delays when connected to familiar Wi-Fi networks, ensuring a seamless experience at home.

As of now, iOS 26.4 is available to developers, with a public beta expected soon. Apple plans to officially roll out the update in the upcoming spring season.
