The China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT) has shared insights into mobile phone shipments within China, detailing trends for April and the first third of 2026.
Growth in the Chinese Smartphone Market
CAICT’s findings show an upward trend in phone shipments within China.
Year-over-year figures for April show a shipment of 25.7 million phones, marking a 2.8% increase. Domestic brands dominated this surge, accounting for 22.1 million units, or about 86.1% of total shipments—an uptick of 2.9% from the previous year. Foreign brands contributed 3.59 million units.
Focusing specifically on smartphones, shipments tally up to 25 million units, reflecting a sizable 12.3% year-over-year increase, comprising 97.3% of all mobile phone shipments.
Examining the January-April period, China’s overall phone market yielded 86.5 million shipments, a decrease of 8.6% from the previous year.
Smartphone shipments in this timeframe decreased by 5.5% to 82 million units, making up 94.8% of total mobile phone shipments.
The report highlighted a reduction in the introduction of new models, with only 138 new mobile phones launched between January and April—down 15.3% from the same period last year—of which 115 were smartphones, indicating a slight drop of 0.9% year-over-year.
Industry Perspectives
This report aligns with insights from various industry analysts regarding the shifting conditions of the smartphone market. Pricing pressures, notably from memory shortages, have prompted discussions on the impacts on low-end phone models, which generally operate with slimmer profit margins compared to mid-range or premium devices. For instance, Samsung has adjusted prices on several offerings, while Apple has maintained its pricing on iPhones.
A rebound in demand was noted in April, with strong sales reported; in the last quarter, significant revenue increases were observed from Greater China.
The CAICT report does not provide detailed shipment data specific to different brands; however, signs of strong performance may indicate favorable outcomes in future earnings reports.
