The Journey to Success: How We Overcame Challenges to Build a Winning App
After five unsuccessful attempts, we found ourselves at a crossroads. It was about five months post our entry into Y Combinator—a prestigious startup accelerator. Motivated by our shared passion for technology and fashion, we faced a harsh reality. We initially created an AI-driven shopping app aimed at enhancing the secondhand market.
Despite our enthusiasm, the app struggled. While users enjoyed browsing, translating that engagement into purchases proved difficult, and we were operating at a loss. It became evident that we were stuck in a challenging cycle that I refer to as “pivot hell.” This intense period involved exploring multiple new ideas over three months and contemplating whether to give up entirely.
During this brainstorming, we tested around five to six different concepts, ranging from a self-help journaling app to a freelance service for dating. Each idea was given just a few weeks of effort, focusing on rapid development, user feedback, and metrics to assess viability. If user engagement and interest weren’t promising, we moved on quickly.
Ultimately, our lowest point came after countless iterations when we needed a break. Reflecting on our journey during a peaceful evening walk helped us realize that we had distanced ourselves from our passions. Inspired to reconnect, we conceived a simple social connection app called Candle, designed to strengthen bonds with family and friends.
This time, we didn’t stress over initial metrics. Instead, we focused on creating a meaningful experience that resonated with us personally. Candle posed daily questions that users could engage with, fostering connection rather than just app usage. Nearly a year after its launch, we were thrilled to report over $1 million in revenue.
Although we employ AI in our development process, it isn’t our centerpiece. We intentionally choose authentic human-generated content for the app, using AI merely as a supportive tool to optimize aspects like translation and grammar. Our aim is to enhance human connections rather than substitute them.
Looking back, our journey could have been more focused. We learned an important lesson about staying true to a beloved problem space rather than flipping industries in search of success. By locking in on a meaningful challenge rather than continuously shifting gears, we could have maintained our passion throughout the process.
