Discover Where You Can Slay Your Utility Bills with HomeBoost’s Smart App

Not long ago, a parent noticed their child wandering around the house, posting reminders like “turn off the lights.”

Having recently exited a previous venture, the parent was on the lookout for the next endeavor. “Watching my kids get involved made me think, ‘Is there a way to contribute to sustainability and climate action?’”

Without expertise in climate technology or mechanical engineering, there was uncertainty about the direction. So, they turned to consumer surveys.

“I’ve always been passionate about surveys, so I delved deep with many—really, a significant number of them.”

The results revealed a common struggle: many consumers found it complex to reduce their utility expenses.

“We consistently heard from users that they receive notifications proclaiming, ‘You’re spending more than your neighbors,’” leading to feelings of being at a loss when it came to taking action.

This realization inspired the co-founding of HomeBoost, a company designed to empower homeowners to carry out energy assessments themselves. It was featured during a notable startup event.

The HomeBoost assessment starts by sending users a BoostBox, a compact kit containing an infrared camera, a blacklight, and access to an app guiding them through the evaluation. The infrared camera highlights areas where temperature escape occurs, while the blacklight indicates where lighting upgrades are possible.

From the gathered data, the app promptly generates a report featuring recommendations for cost-effective improvements, as well as potential rebates based on geographical location.

While many utility providers offer similar assessments, the service quality can vary significantly.

“We heard from several users who felt their previous assessments were just an upsell opportunity for HVAC systems.”

The HomeBoost app is not only quicker and more affordable than traditional options but gives users a sense of control. The service is priced at $99, roughly 25% of the cost associated with a conventional in-person evaluation. Partnerships with various utilities allow for some or all expenses to be covered.

While self-directed assessment appeals to many, not all homeowners prefer DIY processes. Dedicated auditors may spend between two to ten hours assessing properties and compiling findings. HomeBoost has developed a specialized version of its app for these professionals to better serve their clients.

Additionally, the company is piloting a feature connecting homeowners with contractors who can carry out the recommended renovations. This approach helps contractors attract new business and provides them with essential project insights before arriving on-site.

By fostering collaboration among consumers, utility companies, and contractors, there is potential for further climate initiatives. “It’s an exceptional situation where everyone is motivated to lower utility bills, resulting in a positive impact on the environment.”

When considering energy efficiency and cost savings, it’s beneficial to think critically. Here are some insights:
