Google Maps Unveils AI-Powered ‘Ask Maps’ and Enhanced Immersive Experience

Google is enhancing Google Maps with a new feature named “Ask Maps,” powered by Gemini, aimed at making user interactions more conversational while introducing an upgraded “Immersive Navigation” experience that provides three-dimensional visuals and detailed road information.

The “Ask Maps” function allows users to pose intricate, day-to-day queries using everyday language. For instance, one might ask, “Where can I find a charging station for my phone near a coffee shop without long wait times?” or “Are there any public tennis courts with lights that I can use this evening?”

This latest feature is designed to assist in trip planning as well. If you inquire, “What are some must-see stops between the Grand Canyon and Horseshoe Bend?” Ask Maps will provide directions, estimated travel times, and insider tips, such as locating a secret hiking path or accessing entry tickets without a fee.

Google emphasizes that Ask Maps tailors its responses based on a user’s search history or saved locations.

Currently, Ask Maps is being rolled out for users in the U.S. and India on iOS and Android platforms, with plans to extend it to desktop in the near future.

Alongside this, the revamped “Immersive Navigation” feature brings a three-dimensional representation of surroundings, including buildings, overpasses, and terrain, much like what users might find in Apple Maps. This update will also highlight vital road features such as lanes, crosswalks, stop signs, and traffic signals.

The new interface enhances driver features, offering a broader route view through smart zoom capabilities and semi-transparent building overlays.

Moreover, Google has improved the voice guidance system to make directions sound more conversational. A prompt for exiting the highway might now read, “Pass this exit and take the next one for Illinois Route 43 South.”

Users can expect clearer insights regarding alternate routes, weighing options such as longer paths with smoother traffic versus quicker but potentially toll-laden alternatives, and will be notified about real-time obstacles on their journey.

In anticipation of journeys, users can utilize Street View for a preview of their destination and discover parking options nearby.

The rollout for Immersive Navigation in the U.S. begins today, with wider availability planned for iOS, Android devices, as well as CarPlay and Android Auto in the upcoming months.

This latest upgrade follows the incorporation of Gemini into Maps, allowing for enhanced inquiries regarding locations during travel, enriching the navigation experience.
