End of an Era: The Untold Story Behind Comcept’s Closure After Mighty No. 9 and ReCore

Comcept Ceases Operations

The Japanese game development company Comcept has officially shut down. Reports indicate that a Notice of Dissolution was published in the Kanpo government gazette on January 29.

Founded in 2010, Comcept gained attention through its association with the Mega Man series and other popular franchises. However, the founder departed from the company soon after its establishment.

In 2017, Comcept was acquired by Level-5, which later transitioned it into the Level-5 Osaka Office. The founder also left Level-5 in 2024, marking a significant shift in the company’s direction.

One of Comcept’s most notable projects was Mighty No. 9, a Kickstarter campaign launched in 2013 that aimed to raise $900,000 as a successor to Mega Man. The initiative garnered impressive support, culminating in over $4 million in funding.

Despite the financing, Mighty No. 9 faced several delays and ultimately received a lukewarm response from both critics and players upon its 2016 release. The studio was also involved in the development of unreleased titles, including Red Ash: The Indelible Legend and Kaio: King of Pirates. A publisher reported losing $3.8 million on the latter.

Comcept collaborated with Armature Studio on ReCore for Microsoft and contributed to various other games.
