Civilization VII Marks One Year of Epic Gameplay with Exciting New Updates Ahead

Firaxis Commemorates One Year of Civilization VII with Exciting News

Greetings, Civilization enthusiasts! Our development team at Firaxis is proud to reflect on the past year since the ambitious launch of Civilization VII.

Launching a year ago marked the start of a transformative era for the franchise, aiming to redefine how players experience this iconic series. The engaging responses from our players have been invaluable. As we plan ahead, we remain committed to integrating this feedback into the core of Civilization VII to suit both seasoned players and newcomers alike. Today, we’re thrilled to reveal what’s on the horizon.

Update 1.3.2 Set for Release

First up, Update 1.3.2 is slated for imminent release! This update features gameplay enhancements and quality-of-life adjustments. One notable addition will be nested tooltips for improved navigation within Production Menus and Tech & Civics Trees, making empire management smoother. Further tooltips will be added in the future.

On the gameplay front, we’re balancing several civilizations, including adjustments to the French Empire, enhancements for Dai Viet, and a reevaluation of the Mughal Empire, along with fixes for the Shawnee. Complete details will accompany the update notes upon release.

Moreover, targeted system upgrades are being implemented. AI Diplomacy Biases are being refined for more authentic interactions. Additionally, Coastal Raids will now share mechanics with naval pillaging, providing a more cohesive gameplay experience. A new Appeal Lens will allow players to gauge the attractiveness of any tile, enhancing strategic planning.

To celebrate our first anniversary, we’re reintroducing a beloved character—Gilgamesh, the demigod from Uruk, will be available for free to all players. Players can also expect an anniversary profile badge, banner, and title unlocked upon downloading the update.

Introducing “Test of Time” Update
We hinted at significant design plans that would alter Civilization VII’s fabric. Our Firaxis Feature Workshop invited community engagement for new features, providing instrumental feedback for implementation. Now we’re ready to reveal insights following initial community testing.

Three major enhancements are underway. Players can soon choose to guide a single civilization through all ages—a sought-after feature. We are also revamping how victories are obtained, replacing Legacy Paths with a new system called Triumphs.

These changes are comparable to an expansion, transforming the gameplay experience and will be bundled into a substantial free update named “Test of Time,” anticipated for Spring release.

Exploring Continuous Civ Play
The most striking change is the option to lead one civilization across the entire game timeline. This update introduces a choice during Age Transition: maintain your civilization or select a new one. AI competitors will follow suit for personalized strategic storytelling.

This update empowers players with new mechanics supporting this feature, enriching the game’s strategic depth.

Reimagining Victory Conditions
We’re redesigning victory conditions, emphasizing the need to assert dominance in categories like Military, Economy, Culture, or Science early in the game, starting from the Antiquity Age. Victory can now be won from the Exploration Age through diversified and engaging activities.

This system ensures that success stems from strategy and decision-making rather than rigid requirements, promoting varied gameplay experiences.

Transitioning from Legacy Paths to Triumphs
We’re addressing community concerns regarding Legacy Paths, which many players found too prescriptive. The result is the innovative Triumphs system, offering diverse, optional objectives tied to distinct Attributes: Militaristic, Cultural, Scientific, Economic, Diplomatic, and Expansionist. This encourages unique gameplay each session and rewards aggressive and strategic plays alike.

The Test of Time update represents a monumental shift for Civilization VII, crafted based on player feedback. We’re excited for the community to experience these changes in the coming months.
