A thrilling new chapter unfolds for the beloved adventurer.
Recently unveiled at The Game Awards 2025, Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis offers a fresh take on Lara Croft’s groundbreaking debut from 1996, introducing a younger audience to her courageous journey. The game thrusts players into an exhilarating world where Lara confronts not only dinosaurs and panthers but also perilous terrains filled with hidden relics from the mythical city of Atlantis.
Taking on the role of Lara is a talented actor, who embodies the character through both voice acting and performance capture. This new installment aims to respect the essence of the original while evolving Lara’s character for contemporary audiences.
As anticipation builds for the game’s release in February 2027, there have been discussions about the demanding preparation required for performance capture and what keeps Lara Croft a relevant icon in today’s culture.
Can you walk us through how you got cast as Lara Croft?
REGAN: The casting process was quite traditional. My agent reached out to me, stressing how crucial this audition was. Everything about it was shrouded in secrecy. After an intense eight-month audition journey with four separate rounds, I landed the role.
You also performed the motion capture for the character. What kind of physical preparation did that involve?
Once cast, I committed to rigorous weight training three times a week and regular running. Performing in Los Angeles offered fantastic hiking trails. Before heading to the set for performance capture, I woke up early to hit the gym or go for a run. It’s important to feel physically empowered, especially in scenes where I have to fight back.
Lara Croft is undeniably a cultural mainstay. Why do you think she still resonates with audiences even after all these years?
Lara represented female empowerment since her inception. She was one of the first strong female protagonists in gaming. Back then, iconic characters were often male, so Lara’s confidence and intelligence were groundbreaking. Her transition to film cemented her status as an icon. She’s strong and fearless, and it’s inspiring to finally play her.
Did you focus on any specific physical or vocal traits to bring her character to life?
Absolutely. I focused on the physicality of Lara through strength training and boxing. Her British humor and charm played a significant role too. I aimed to reflect her strong presence.
What can fans expect from this iteration of Lara Croft?
Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis is a reimagining of Lara’s story. It honors its roots while showcasing her evolution. This Lara is unapologetic and forthright, providing a refreshing perspective on female characters.
And before we wrap up, your thoughts on Lara’s design in this game?
Her updated look is quite appealing. The design team did an incredible job, capturing the essence of a strong, athletic character. This depiction resonates with audiences.
Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis is set to launch on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC on February 12, 2027. Additionally, a new game, Tomb Raider: Catalyst, will also debut sometime in 2027.
