Discover the Secret Lair Dandân Decklist

Understanding Dandân

Greetings, Magic enthusiasts!

Today marks the launch of an exciting addition from the renowned Secret Lair team: Dandân! In collaboration with a fellow game designer, we’ve curated an experience tailored for fans of blue magic. But what exactly is Dandân?

Dandân introduces a fresh format, crafted by blue magic enthusiasts, for those who share the love. This gameplay diverges significantly from contemporary Magic standards, promoting extended, strategic matches that hinge on card advantage. Victory will require several turns of skillful engagement, with key battles taking place on the stack.

To enhance this unique experience, we’ve tweaked some rules typically found in Magic. Players start with 20 life and seven cards, just as they would normally, and the hand limit remains at seven. Attempting to draw from an empty library still spells defeat, but several noteworthy distinctions exist:

  • There is a shared library and graveyard for all players. Any reference to “your” graveyard or library pertains to this common zone.
  • The “owner” of a card on the battlefield or stack is the player who cast it.
  • When multiple players draw cards simultaneously, each draws one at a time, starting with the current active player.
  • Players may take a free mulligan if their initial hand lacks at least two lands or spells, but this option is lost once a regular mulligan is taken.

These adjustments largely maintain the essence of typical Magic gameplay while making mulligans a touch more forgiving and clarifying how shared graveyards and libraries operate. However, Dandân’s identity truly shines through its specially curated card selections.

Creating the Dandân Experience

Initially, our goal was to stay authentic to the spirit of Dandân, inspired by community feedback. We focused on refining tempo plays to enhance their impact without overhauling core mechanics. In our testing, we noted that effective use of mana and card advantage were dominant strategies, overshadowing the thrill of early Dandân draws. Thus, we aimed to balance the gameplay while preserving the depth of interactions on the stack.

Highlighted Cards

One card we found to be overly cumbersome was Supplant Form, which at six mana rarely fit into fast-paced games. In contrast, Control Magic proved to be a classic card that, although challenging to resolve at four mana, could significantly shift game dynamics in your favor.

Chart a Course emerges as a valuable cantrip that rewards early aggression with Dandân. The dilemma of whether to use it early or save it for later adds an interesting strategic layer to gameplay.

We also experimented with an extra-turn spell, which brought about an exciting shift in tempo. Capture of Jingzhou, despite its difficulty to play, can create major tempo advantages when employed tactically alongside cards like Mystic Sanctuary.

Similarly, we found Diminishing Returns unwieldy at four mana as it often left players vulnerable post-resolution. We opted for Day’s Undoing, which is more manageable in counter scenarios.

Adding utility lands improved gameplay variety. The removal of red sources necessitated a more sophisticated land selection, and Haunted Fengraf exemplifies how cards can operate differently in a self-contained format compared to a more expansive Magic environment.

Excluded Cards

Mystic Retrieval, usually a staple in Dandân, proved problematic when an opponent held a solitary red source. Its tendency to disrupt gameplay patterns led to its exclusion, while a focus on a mono-blue aesthetic was favored.

Vision Charm, a departure from popular Dandân choices, was identified as detrimental in maintaining tempo-based strategies. The prospect of a one-mana board wipe could shift the balance too heavily in favor of the player with more Dandâns, which ultimately led us to exclude it.

The Secret Lair Dandân Deck is now ready for enthusiasts eager to explore this captivating format. The deck will launch through the Chaos Vault at MagicSecretLair.com tomorrow, March 16, at 9 a.m. PT. Don’t forget: stay vigilant against Memory Lapse; it’s always a possibility!
