Fans of Destiny 2 are rallying after news that Bungie and Sony will cease future support of the beloved game following an anticipated update on June 9. Given the nearly 11-year journey of the franchise, players are looking for ways to voice their discontent.

Some community members are organizing to flood the chat during Sony’s upcoming State of Play with messages demanding a sequel, Destiny 3. A broader initiative aims to boost the player count on June 9, encouraging both loyal and former players to return to the game for a communal event.

While some dreams set ambitious targets, there are attainable milestones. Following the recent announcement of the substantial “dream checklist” update, metrics indicate that the number of concurrent players on Steam has significantly increased, with peaks rising from 10,000 to nearly 28,000.

The primary aim for players is to surpass the all-time high concurrent player count of 316,000, a record set during the release of Lightfall. However, some insiders speculate that this might be overly ambitious due to a substantial drop in player engagement in recent months.

Despite the challenges, achieving impressive numbers is still within reach. Current trends suggest that if player counts are around 28,000, they could multiply following the update. Notably, statistics focus primarily on Steam, while console users are estimated at a ratio of 4:1 compared to PC users.

A reasonable target might be to surpass the concurrent player total from the Edge of Fate expansion, which recorded 108,000. Although this figure falls short of the record, it would still represent a commendable achievement. A total player count approaching one million would also be a significant milestone.

However, there’s skepticism surrounding the sustainability of these numbers beyond the immediate aftermath of the update, especially since no further content is expected. Players have been encouraged by cryptic messages from community leads to continue playing. While it’s uncertain if this collective action will convince Bungie to extend content or greenlight a new project in the franchise, there’s still hope that a dedicated team might keep Destiny 2 alive with updates.

Engaging with the community and showing strong numbers is a worthwhile endeavor.
