The game director for Marathon has recently addressed some of Bungie’s strategies for refining its extraction shooter. He acknowledged that many players find the current experience “overwhelming” and shared plans for new *Player vs. Environment* (PvE) and more casual *Player vs. Player* (PvP-lite) modes.

Highlighting some positive aspects, the director credited the game’s launch of multiple modes and features, like the Cryo Archive map, a ranked system, experimental duo queues, and the C.A.R.R.I system. He expressed appreciation for the dedicated community that has rallied around the game, acknowledging their passionate support.

However, he recognized the difficulties players encounter. He stated, “Marathon can feel difficult to grasp,” especially for those who may not have ample time to invest or a consistent group to play with. He noted that many players prefer a more relaxed experience, which has posed a challenge for balancing the game’s endgame scenarios—especially with issues such as grenade usage. Season three is set to introduce significant improvements aimed at enhancing the initial player experience.

Moving forward, the director laid out Bungie’s vision for the game’s evolution, intending to maintain the thrilling gameplay that fans enjoy while further expanding the vibrant world they’ve created. Key additions for Season 2 include a new Runner Shell, a nighttime variant of the Dire Marsh map, fresh weapons and gear, adjustments to the Runner stats, and better progression rates for various levels.

Season 2 will also include notable changes: the experimental duo queue feature will be formalized into a rotating game mode, and two new modes will be introduced—one focused on collaborative PvE objectives, and the other, a PvP-lite mode, will lessen the emphasis on player combat.

In closing, he hinted at future developments, mentioning that season four will aim to deepen the current extractive gameplay, while season five will explore the synergy between PvE and PvP elements, adding new dimensions to the unique sci-fi landscape of Marathon.

This latest update from Bungie comes at a critical time when discussions around the game’s sustainability are becoming more prevalent, especially following recent news about a significant financial setback reported by Sony, Bungie’s parent company.
