The much-anticipated release of Apple’s foldable iPhone, rumored to be named the “iPhone Ultra,” is encountering production delays due to hinge reliability issues.

Reports indicate that the device’s hinge does not consistently meet Apple’s quality benchmarks during open-and-close use. Resolution of this mechanical problem is crucial for production to advance.

Apple has focused on the hinge’s design in its foldable smartphone development. It is expected that Liquid Metal will play a key role in this component, with a supplier already designated. This material is designed to enhance resistance to bending, making it suitable for a foldable device.

This would mark the first time Apple incorporates this technology in a significant mechanical component, having previously used Liquid Metal for smaller parts. Apple’s exploration into the material has spanned 15 years, stemming from a licensing agreement that began in 2010.

Concerns regarding screen creasing have been present in foldable devices since their inception. Tests suggest that the new device can maintain a nearly crease-free appearance, although some creasing may occur. Production orders are reportedly aiming for a crease depth of under 0.15mm and an angle under 2.5 degrees, indicating Apple’s commitment to minimizing creasing.

Despite hinge challenges, there is an indication that the release timeline may not be significantly affected, with mass production expected to begin in July. The anticipated launch is still set for fall 2026 during Apple’s annual September event, although customer availability may extend to December.

Notably, despite its larger design, the foldable iPhone aims to provide the feel of a traditional iPhone, leading to skepticism about the necessity of a stylus for the new device.

Expected features of the foldable iPhone include a 7.8-inch inner display, a 5.5-inch cover screen, powered by the A20 chip and C2 modem, and a Touch ID-integrated power button with dual rear cameras. The projected price is around $2,000.
