In its latest update, iOS 26.4, Apple has made a noteworthy adjustment to Family Sharing features. Now, adult users in a family group can utilize their individual payment methods instead of being obligated to share one account for all transactions.
Historically, Apple has mandated that all participants in a Family Sharing setup rely on a single payment method. This adjustment liberates family members from the previous requirement to share financial details.
The recent update signifies that with iOS 26.4, Family Sharing participants can still share content without needing to line up payment methods. Apple acknowledged this enhancement in its release notes.
Previous Statement:
When the family organizer activates purchase sharing and others in the group do the same, they gain access to each other’s shared content. The organizer remains responsible for covering everyone’s purchases unless purchase sharing is disabled.
Updated Statement:
With the purchase sharing feature activated, group members can access shared content. The organizer finances purchases unless the feature is disabled or adult family members elect to use their personal payment methods.
While other adults can still opt to use the organizer’s payment details, they now also have the flexibility to enter their own. This change simplifies the process of sharing services among family and friends, reducing the burden of covering someone else’s buying habits.
It’s worth noting that children under Family Sharing will continue to use the organizer’s payment method for purchases.
Anticipated to be publicly available within a week, iOS 26.4 marks a significant step forward in how families engage with Apple services.
