In a recent discussion at GDC, developers from NetEase Games revealed insights into their popular title, Marvel Rivals, which boasts a roster of 48 heroes from comic book lore. Amidst ongoing debates about the game’s future character lineup, many are curious whether original characters will make their debut.

When asked about the possibility of introducing new, original heroes, the executive producer offered a straightforward reply: “Not at this time.” The focus remains on what’s currently available.

While it’s acknowledged that the studio has the green light to craft original heroes, players shouldn’t expect any new creations before Season 8 kicks off. “The timing just isn’t right,” it was stated.

In the meantime, NetEase is gearing up for its first major collaboration with the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) through the upcoming Path to Doomsday event, launching in April. This year-long celebration will tie in with Avengers: Doomsday, set to premiere on December 18.

It’s planned a whole year in advance, ensuring that updates to Marvel Rivals sync seamlessly with the overarching Marvel narrative. While the crossover potential excites many fans, it was reassured that “the game comes first.”

Though the prospect of introducing characters from outside the Marvel universe has been brought up, it was confirmed they will stick strictly to Marvel content due to the wealth of characters available. “We have more than enough characters in the Marvel universe,” it was remarked.

“It’s not an overwhelming number, and we can manage it effectively.”

Since NetEase aims to expand its character lineup each season, confidence was expressed in balancing the roster. The main priority lies in optimizing the user interface as the number of characters grows.

“It’s less about the characters themselves,” it was elaborated, “and more about how we allow players to choose their favorites and engage with new options. Each season introduces a challenge in presenting these characters effectively.”

With Marvel Rivals heading into its second year, fans can look forward to new characters like Deadpool, Gambit, and Angela, along with groups like the Fantastic Four. Players are eagerly anticipating the inclusion of characters like Bishop and Cyclops, with an emphasis on redefining gameplay dynamics.

“Diversity of gameplay is crucial,” it was noted. “If we introduce characters with similar abilities, it reduces the excitement. Variety adds depth.”

Recently, the team unveiled White Fox as the 48th character for Season 7, with Black Cat from the Spider-Man lineup slated for Season 7.5 coming soon. The identities of future heroes remain closely guarded as preparations for the anticipated reveals in Season 8 continue.
