PlayStation is gearing up to introduce a new feature that will allow PS5 users to view player counts for games. While this feature aims to increase player engagement, it may inadvertently contribute to negativity in gaming conversations, especially considering the already challenging landscape of the PlayStation Store.
PlayStation is currently testing a “Community Activity” widget for the PS5 Welcome Hub. This feature includes a “Top 10” section that ranks the week’s most-played games by player count, while another option, “Trending Now,” showcases titles that are gaining traction based on gameplay time or matches played.
While having access to game-specific player statistics could be seen as a blessing, there are concerns regarding the implications of this new information. The pitfalls of relying on player counts have already been observed among users on other platforms.
In recent years, the focus on player count metrics has surged in various online discussions. Whenever a new title launches, platforms are inundated with chatter about its performance according to available statistics. However, such numbers don’t necessarily reflect the game’s quality — they simply indicate its popularity. Multiplayer titles, in particular, face scrutiny as gamers often compare figures, hastily labeling unique experiences as failures if their player counts lag behind major blockbusters.
Noteworthy new titles won’t always dominate these rankings, and they shouldn’t be judged solely by their ability to do so. While it’s nice to see many people enjoy the same game, there’s no need for data to validate personal enjoyment. Elevating player counts in such a way could lead players to prioritize what’s trending over their genuine interests, perpetuating a culture where popularity eclipses quality.
Typically, console games have been insulated from the intense player count discourse prevalent in PC gaming. However, this new widget could shift the narrative. It’s concerning to imagine the ramifications on social media if a title fails to make a splash on the Top 10 list.
This feature could exacerbate the discoverability issues that the PlayStation Store already faces. The Community Activity widget may steer players towards more popular games while overshadowing new titles that could be appealing. While the “Trending Now” feature offers some potential for discovery, it appears to disproportionately focus on multiplayer games versus single-player experiences. Instead of introducing this widget, it might be more beneficial for PlayStation to enhance how games are curated in the Store.
As of now, there’s no timeline for when this Community Activity widget will roll out widely. Before fully launching this feature, PlayStation should carefully consider its potential drawbacks, as it may amplify already concerning aspects of the gaming experience on PS5.
